Proposal to Demand a NoFly Zone for Syria at the NATO Summit

Occupy Chicago, along with the whole of Chicago, should loudly demand that NATO countries and their allies protect the Syrian people with a Libyan revolution-style no-fly zone at this May's NATO summit in Chicago, since this is what the Syrian people are asking for because the crisis there reached genocidal proportions many months ago. At first many Occupy Chicago protesters will likely be loudly opposed to Western intervention to stop the genocide in Syria, due to the history of imperialism, but now the situation in Syria is so bad with government shelling and massacres killing around a hundred each day or more that the Syrian people are demanding the world act to give them a no-fly zone. This is an uncontroversial fact. Ask anyone in Syria. They want a no-fly zone to strike Assad's air assets, tanks and artillery positions besieging many cities and villages across Syria because this will give the Free Syrian Army and allied groups the advantage they need to defend the people in these cities and villages from Assad's ground forces and secret police who regularly move in after weeks of shelling to carry out massacres of men, women and children in the most brutal ways, like the Bab Sbaa massacre in Homs early in March this year and many others.

There is no going back for them now, and the only way forward without international help is through many more bloody massacres and brutal attrition and repression for a long way ahead. To chose for the Syrian people that NATO intervention is not an appropriate response to this crisis is putting your far away opinion above the people on the ground there facing torture and execution. We are not in a privileged position in America to be telling people overseas in a genocidal situation "no, we know better" to their specific requests for help. To be actively opposed to international intervention in this situation is simply advocating for the continuation of the current forms of intervention, which is the foreign intervention of Russia, China, Iran, Hezbollah and Venezuela, with material support and fighters to help advise and assist the regime in trying to crush this revolution, and Russia and China have continued to veto binding UN Security Counsel resolutions aimed against Assad. People throughout the Middle East know who the direct and indirect supporters of Bashar Al-Assad are, and they are rapidly losing legitimacy. The US made mistakes in the years after September 11, including the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq under false pretenses, and this has caused people in the US to be very wary of the West in the Middle East, but now that same type of deception and greed is causing Western nations to forego action when this is what people throughout the Middle East want, and it is the Syrian people now left suffering and paying for these mistakes.

In the early days of Occupy Chicago, last fall, we passed a proposal at a General Assembly that said we do not support the use of our military for corporate conquest, but only "to help the afflicted people of the world." Now the injustice is slow action and inaction, and we in Chicago are in a uniquely powerful position to influence the international discourse about stopping the genocide in Syria. In solidarity and agreement with the Syrian people facing immanent extermination for asking for their freedom, to apply pressure on Assad's supporters to stop protecting him, and to pressure Western nations to act more swiftly and decisively, Occupy Chicago and all of Chicago's message to NATO and the international community this May should be loud and clear: Chicago demands a no-fly zone to protect the Syrian people from Bashar Al-Assad’s genocide.
