I have an issue with the phrase "reclaim our . . . democracy" in the Who We Are statement on the Occupy Chicago website, along with other parts of the statement. I believe that we don't have a democracy in the USA and that is exactly what we need to change. I would like us to discuss this particular statement (which I think is very important as a factual matter as well as pertaining to what Occupy is all about) and any other issues anyone has with the Who We Are declaration in a GA, specifically next Friday if possible.

I think the first point to clarify, is that America under our current Constitution has never been a "Democracy", but a "Democratic Republic", the difference being that majority rule does not over rule a wide range of individual rights. It is more designed to keep each of us off the others back. This philosophy is largely predicated upon the premise that man is a no good son of a bitch, whereas a democracy presupposes that man is driven by an altruistic concern for his fellow man. The first, popularized by Thomas Hobbs, the 17th century philosopher, drove a number of the early English economist/philosopher (Mills/Smith). The epitome of the latter, was probably most accurately realized in the French revolution and in its motto, Liberte, Equalite, Fraternite, where the individual was inferior to the greater good.
This was covered in Hannah Arendt's "On Revolution", whose primary study was in the differences between the French (European model of revolutionary government) vs. the American Revolution.
Still, the observation that America hasn't got what it had (assuming this is Ted's point), is exactly spot on. America is ruled by a facist state, where the government and business have merged, vs the proletariet and government state represented by communism. However, both are dictatorships and both are tyrannical governments, and tyranny is a failed economic model, which is all to obvious to all. It is why we all feel we're getting screwed.
Personally, I have little use for either, but am somewhat fond of our former democratic republic that served America well for about 200 years. Now there are a myriad of issues on can point to as the manifestation of this cancer of tyranny that afflicts America today; and we can either look at all the branches of the tree, or focus upon its main trunk and roots that make the whole of this hungry wolf possible.
First and foremost, OWS has correctly identified the primary component of that trunk and root as the private central bank, the Federal Reserve Bank, but close behind is the insolvent Wall Street it serves, and the corporation those masters of Wall Street own.
The question therefore comes down to how best to attack the trunk and root system of this cancerous (figurative) tree.
My first observation is that if you are going to attack the government which our facist state has purchased, you have to attack it by that charter by which it claims justifies its rule. The only alternative is to foment violent revolution, but this requires waiting until the social fabric has been so torn asunder that violence is the only remedy. The problem being here is that its outcome always results in another tyrannical government and relies upon someone like George Washington with the strength of character to hand the country back to the people, when in possession of the power.
If we accept for the moment that we attack by the governments charter, we must focus upon our United States Constitution. And if that is to be our focus, then the trunk and roots of this cancer that has grown up around America is to be found in the abuse of Article I, Sec 8 & 9, and the X (tenth) Amendment, of said Constitution.
Herein lies the constitutional power/duty(s) of the Congress, which have been usurped and are occuppied by "cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men". The condition is best described by President George Washington, in his Farewell Address to the Nation in 1796. where the object of his rath is the First U.S. Bank, America's first experiment with a private central bank. To wit (paraphrased)

Our government can only operate justly when,“the regular deliberation and action (Public Forum) of the constituted authorities (Congress), where consistent and wholesome plans are digested in the public procedure (Public Forum), are formed by common counsels and modified by mutual interest… let there be no usurpation of the public procedure, from the constitutional power/duty(s) of the Congress” (Article I, Sec. 8 & 9).
Lest “they become potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will subvert the power of the people, and take up the reins of power for themselves.”
For ”through this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.”

Take it for what you will, but forcing the Congress to reclaim its constitutional power/duty(s) (Article I Sec 8&9) and leaving to the states those other powers not given to the federal government by our Constitution (X Amendment), not only means the end of the Federal Reserve Bank, which ends the insolvent Wall Street 2B2Fail banks that rule our lives, it undercuts the power of those corporations that have established themselves by the illegal interperation of the "Inter-state Commerce Clause" (also Art I. Sec 8&9). This then cripples those oligarchs of our ruling Kleptocracy to fund their continued and future purchase of our Congress, President, and Supreme Court. It also cuts off the slush fund financial support to the CIA and renegade government black opps.
I was planning on being to GA next Saturday, but if anyone would really like to explore this issue further, I will try to make it on Friday also. But if Saturday is O.K., I was planning on coming down around 3 pm to meet and converse with others regarding this very issue, and I live quite some distance from Chicago.
I had also put in a request to Education to give a presentation on my book, "New American Revolution: The Constitutional Overthrow of the United States Government" prior to GA on Saturday, which address this very issue you have raised. I can present it rather quickly and I am hoping to hear back from them soon.
