The Occupy Chicago Music Festival
The Occupy Chicago Music Festival
The Occupy Festival will take place on May 12th and 13th, 2012 in Chicago’s Union Park. The Occupy Festival will be an event which incorporates music, art, community and social awareness which will look to channel the momentum of the thousands of individuals who will be looking to peacefully organize and protest within the city of Chicago during the month of May, and act as a catalyst for various actions just prior to the G8 NATO summits.
The Festival is fully permitted by the city of Chicago and will follow all ordinances and guidelines set forth by the city and we will work to create an atmosphere that is constructive in engaging the general public and building solidarity amongst the occupiers and Chicago community. The event will strive to be a positive beacon of the Occupy Movement and those looking to support it.
The intent will be to generate awareness within a welcoming environment in an effort to activate more interest in the shared root causes of the Occupy movements nationwide, as well as other groups whose focus is on furthering the plight of the general disenfranchised public at large. The festival will also act as a fundraiser for the occupy movement by donating at least 50% of net profits for actions to take place throughout the summer and beyond.
Goals for the Festival
• Creating a sense of community with the citizens of Chicago and with those who will be visiting Chicago during the month of May in protest of the G8 and NATO summits.
• Providing a large open area to attract new passionate individuals from all over into the movement who are currently unaware of the nature of the occupy movement by providing an atmosphere that is welcoming, fun and informative which will shed a positive light about the movement to the greater public in an effort to grow.
• Educate and activate those not yet tuned into the issues currently threatening the interests of the 99%.
• Promote solidarity amongst Occupiers nationwide and worldwide who will be in Chicago in May by providing a safe and inviting area for people to get introduced to social issues currently affecting the people.
• Generating financial support for the international occupation and protests that will be going on in Chicago for the month of May.

Re: The Occupy Chicago Music Festival
I'm sure most would prefer others not profiting off the movement. Is this fifty percent being used to pay people to staff and organize the event or is that being factored into the cost of putting on the event?
ETA: I second Matt's question, is the promoter looking for our good graces or partial backing?

Re: The Occupy Chicago Music Festival
The other 50% is being divided up in different ways. For one, we are going to be offering a program to allow Occupiers with Occupy Chicago to not only be volunteers and get into the festival for free, but also get paid for their services while they assist in the making of the event.
However, any of the remainder of that overhead is going to SEM, which is the company which sponsors North Coast Festival and coincidentally, this event. Keep in mind, SEM bears all the risk, both political and financial in this endeavor, and have gone through great lengths to make this a possibility. I do not believe that you can use the word profiteering to accurately describe this because they could have thrown this festival without Occupy backing or name and kept 100% of the profits. So my personal stance on this is not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Many of these artists are being paid much less than their usual rate to empower our movement in a number of different ways.
I do not want to get into specific numbers at this time, but SEM has already invested into this event and if the event bombs, which I highly doubt, but if it were to happen, they would be responsible for all of the loss. They are also responsible for, as I said, the political risk with this festival. However, we have been completely legitimate thus far in our handling of this event, and this is going to do wonders for Occupy PR and organize many uninitiated into our movement.
