Proposal to help Hull House

Postby kt.ea » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:28 pm

Hello, I would like to propose that Occupy Chicago takes a look at ways to help Hull House stay alive in the Chicago community. This coming spring, Hull House will be declaring bankruptcy and shutting their doors. Hull House is such an inspiration, and it will be a SHAME to see it shut down.

Hull House has been open for 120 years. Just recently they ran into financial troubles and haven't been able to successfully fund-raise. The last couple years of troubles shouldn't lead to the end of 120 years of success. What can we do, Occupy Chicago? I hope we can find ideas.

Here are some of the areas Hull House operates programs:
-Child Welfare & Foster Care
-Domestic Violence
-Education & Literacy
-Homeless Services
-Senior Services
-Small Business Development
-Workforce Development
-Youth Services

And here is a link to some info about the situation on the Tribune's site:

So I guess this isn't so much a proposal as it is a subject for discussion? Anyone have any ideas on helping this place stay open? There is so much history in the House, so much positive history...120+years serving immigrants, families, children, mothers, fathers....promoting positivity in exactly the issues I'd imagine occupiers would completely rally behind. Anyone with an idea, let's work together? I'm trying to at least spread the word.

This is disturbing news. Please keep this thread alive with more... I'd love to read an analogy between The Association House Movement and the Occupy Movement from you. This background work would be useful.

Also of interest is that this original social movement was a women's initiative. What's intriguing as regards the leadership voices of OC and the social issues it uses to illustrate the concerns of the 99%. There are plenty of women in leadership, but their's are not feminist voices. This demonstrates fabulous progress on one hand, but also illuminates the the unfinished business of the second wave feminist movement.

This opens a very interesting and unattended channel for people fill and become active in this movement, while knitting their contributions to the messaging the OWS movement and OC.

Can you monitor and update us please?

Occupy Northwest Side are on this, hopefully others are too. We'd like to propose a candlelight vigil in the next couple of weeks. We'd like to get in contact with all employees that have been let go, etc. Any thoughts?

Former and current (upset) employees started a Facebook page, here: https://www.facebook.com/JaneAddamsHH

I would suggest starting there to get in touch.

*Also: How can I learn more about Occupy NW Side?
