Honoring Occupy at Crossroads Fund Benefit

Crossroads Fund is pleased to announce that we are presenting the Donald F. Erickson Synapses Award to the Occupy Movement at our 30th Anniversary Celebration on March 2nd. The Donald F. Erickson Synapses Award recognizes Don Erickson, the founder of the Synapses Foundation, which was dissolved in 2007, with the assets serving as the first endowment gift to Crossroads Fund. Don was a Chicago activist who taught geography, history and social studies at Calumet High School. He was a committed activist for social justice, working to end human rights violations across the globe. He had a particular interest in ending U.S. corporate support of the military regime in Burma.

Crossroads Fund is grateful and honored to remember Don and his work for social change. In addition, we are thrilled to honor Don’s legacy as a peace and justice activist. Because of Don’s interest in building solidarity between movements, and organizing for corporate accountability, we find it fitting to present the Donald F. Erickson Synapses Award to the Occupy Movement, to honor a movement who has taken to the streets in pursuit of economic justice and government accountability.
We hope that Chicago members of the Occupy Movement can join us on March 2nd to celebrate 30 years of social justice. To that end we would like to offer four free tickets to the Crossroads Fund annual benefit (March 2nd from 5:30 to 9:30 pm at the Chicago Cultural Center) to each of the Chicago Occupy “chapters”: Occupy Chicago, Occupy Rogers Park, Occupy the Southside and Occupy El Barrio for a total of 16 tickets. If any one group does not want to use all of their tickets, they can offer them to another Occupy group.

The event will feature a short program, during which we will honor activist and academic Barbara Ransby and the Chicago Freedom School in addition to Occupy. We would also like for one person from Occupy to accept the award on behalf of the movement and make a three minute speech as part of the program. We ask all of our program speakers to keep their remarks brief to insure that people have time to enjoy the food, music, networking and fun of the celebration! Additional Occupy members are also welcome to purchase tickets to the benefit, which are $95, or $30 for a limited income ticket.

We will leave it up to you to decide the process by which you want to select attendees and choose a speaker. However, we need a list of the names of attendees and the name and contact information of the speaker by February 22nd.

Finally we’d like to invite you to live stream the program, to make it available for those unable to attend. We’d be happy work out the technical and logistical details with you if you are interested.

Thanks for the kind words! I'll be at the General Assembly tonight to present the proposal and answer any questions that folks might have. We're asking that each group make internal decisions about who will attend, and present a final list to us, to cut down on confusion. Hopefully we'll come up with a good forum for that tonight.
