Mismanagement of tuition in Colleges

Postby Chatto » Fri Nov 04, 2011 2:32 pm

I remember a couple of weeks ago there was a proposal for forgiving student debt that was pretty much completely rejected. I definitely agree with it being shot down, as it is very misdirected. The real problem here is that students are not active consumers most of the time. A lot of students have bought into a mindset perpetuated by society that you can go to college, get a good job, and pay off your loans. This is no longer the case. I'm wanting to re-phrase this proposal to better address the root of the problem. I definitely want to spark some discussion of this topic before proposing it at a GA, but here's what I have so far:

We want transparency when it comes to where tuition is being spent. We should not be footing the bill when it comes to ridiculous marketing campaigns and building huge sports stadiums to impress prospective students. If at all possible, we want to re-evaluate student debt and reduce it by cutting any costs that is not direct to the actual service of education(books, classroom materials, actual teacher salaries). Furthermore, there needs to be a greater degree of transparency when it comes to tuition. Students should be far more aware of what their money is going towards. Overall the actual cost of education should have decreased in the past couple of years due to the advances in technology.

Even though I'm not a big fan of "traditional" education, I think that transparency of spending in colleges can eliminate a great deal of the academic bullshit that really goes on in terms of the mismanagement of student's tuition. The Cooperate mentality should have no place in the realm of education.

As always, discussion is welcome, help this idea evolve, fellow occupiers!
