My name is Jenny, I just joined the SA committee tonight. I am Roman Catholic, and have a BA in religious studies and a certificate in Pastoral Ministry. I have taught high school religion, facilitated week long service retreats for high school and college students in Doddridge County West Virginia, worked at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice near Terre Haute, IN, and have been active in many parish communities.
I would like to start leading Taize prayer services for Occupy Chicago. Taize Prayer is an eccumenical form of prayer that was started in Taize, France during WWII as a safe place for refugees. In addition to providing shelter and food, they organized study groups and regular communal prayer for peace and reconciliation in our hearts, communities, and the world.
I have experience facilitating these style of prayer services. They can be elaborate or simple. They usually consist of singing several simple short meditative ostinato songs, a reading from a scripture, a good period for silent meditation, a sharing of intentions, and passing of the sign of peace.
I would like to host these services on Sunday afternoons. If you have ideas for other times that might work better or ideas about a gathering space for the winter months please let me know. I can provide all of the needed materials. If anyone plays an instrument - guitar, flute, violin, clarinet, piano, etc and would like to provide some instrumental accompaniment that would be great, but not necessary. Similarly, if anyone would like to help lead the singing and other parts of the service please let me know.
Peace and all good,
Jenny Jeck
Hi, & welcome! This is an interesting proposal. Speaking for myself, I don't see why there should be any objection to you facilitating this type of "spiritual circle".
I'd suggest that you consult with the SA members who plan to hold Occupy Eucharist events, so that you & they can be sure you don't schedule on the same Sundays.
It's my impression that we/they sort of agreed that such weekend events as Occupy Shabbat, Occupy Eucharist, & now Taize Prayer should be held once a month, not every week, so that weekend "prime time" is able to accommodate many different types of spiritual circles without counter-scheduling against each other.
Look forward to hearing more about your plans, including (but, of course, not limited to) whether you're going to try to do this during the winter (in which case, where? outdoors? at winter HQ? at a church?) or want to kick it into gear full-force once the weather warms.

P.S. I started this thread for you in order to take advantage of the "poptop" feature of the forum, which allows people to easily see which threads have the latest additions to them. The "Spiritual Affairs" thread itself was "pinned" to the top of our forum by Tech so that people could just read what we're about. I don't think they intended for anyone to put replies in that thread, since pinning makes the poptop feature go away. I don't know if maybe you'd even like to delete your post from that thread, to keep it "clear", as I've completely copied it here anyway. Just a tho't.

Now that I, and perhaps most of us, are less pre-occupied with the holidays; I hope that a schedual of spiritual & religous events and Opportunities, Sunday afternoons (which tend to already be busy for me) and other times, can start to take shape.
I look forward to meeting all involved and finding ways to engage spiritually, Occupying Chicago hearts, as well as my own.

I don't think we ever really agreed on the once a week thing. We just sorta stopped having events. And there hasn't been much going on downtown for some time now. Most of the activity has spread to the neighborhoods, with Occupy Rogers Park, Occupy the South Side, etc.
When we get the Cermak building there will be more possible opportunity for SA involvement and action. Regardless of that, are there ways we can support the community and do our work without a central location?
