Re: Legal
Have there been any challenges to date of the use of these ordinances? And if so why not? Will the Legal fees be paid for out of our General Fund? Why or Why Not. Does Cleavland and Cinci trump Chicago when it come to occupying a park? Will I ever get a response to this?
Has anyone checked out 600 W. Wells? Would anyone from our memberless body and headlesshorse person, be able to see if actually doing something positive like creating a park here is possible.

Attorneys from the National Lawyer's Guild are representing many of those arrested in October. You can get more information from the Civil Liberties Defense Committee.bucklaw wrote:Have there been any challenges to date of the use of these ordinances? And if so why not? A subset of the arrestees have pled guilty and have been sentenced to a fine and 10 hours of community service. Others are planning to plead not guilty on First amendment grounds and requesting a jury trial, in hopes of jury nullification. Since the sentence does not include jail time, each jury trial requires the defendant to pay a $250 fee. A temp check has been taken at one GA regarding whether the GA would be willing to fund that endeavor. We will not know the total cost until we learn the plans of the city's Corporation Counsel as far as consolidating the cases.
As far as occupying a space, many Occupations have evolved into establishing indoor headquarters after brutal evictions from their outdoor occupations. Occupy Wall Street is one such group that has done so. Occupy Chicago has just approved the location for our indoor winter headquarters. Whether we attempt yet again to occupy a public space has not yet been decided, but I personally think another attempt in the spring will be an abject failure, as the Mayor will crack down immediately due to the impending G8/NATO Summit.
