Community Service/Volunteer ACTION!!!!
Community Service/Volunteer ACTION!!!!
When we passed the Chicago Spring Proposal awhile back, we agreed to be doing consistent actions that will help the community and foster further outreach. We have been putting on a lot of great teach-ins, among other things, but one thing we have lacked is our community service aspect. We always say we are building the community we want to see here. But in order to do that, we must also start to heal the broken community that already exists. So, here is a small opportunity for us all to give back.
I, along with the help of David Walker, have established a relationship with Cornerstone Community Center, www.ccolife.org, a not for profit shelter here in Uptown. They provide housing, food, clothing, job training, and mental health services to hundreds of people everyday. Most of these people are homeless because they lost a job, were injured or had an unexpected health issue, or were put out of homes by a natural disaster etc. Cornerstone agrees with the message and purpose of Occupy Chicago, and is happy to work with us! Let's put our money where our mouth is and help people in our own community!
In addition to doing a good deed and helping the less fortunate, we will gain attention and positive press. Cornerstone has expressed their interest in establishing a relationship beyond the holiday season, helping each other reach out to those in need and creating a just society.
Also, those that were arrested in October, like myself, can work towards community service hours if that was the result of their court case. Let's get the ball rolling! I can and will email anyone the sign up sheet, but I can not attach it to this email. Below are dates that cornerstone NEEDS US TO COME SERVE MEALS! They can use up to 8 people each day and time! Email me and let me know when you can come!
