Winter & the Path to April 7th
Winter & the Path to April 7th
If we're having a huge day in April, I believe we'll need some momentum during the cold, winter months to help us get there. An intermediary step. I think we should have a slow, but steady campaign during the next few months before the lead up to April 7th.
My proposal is simple. Let's do a food drive in conjunction with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. "Move your donations out of politics and into an organization that's helping feed the needy."
It fits our mission.
The banks are allegedly spending $850,000 to start a smear campaign against #ows. It'll be difficult for people to speak poorly about the movement if it's taking direct action to help needy people. It's good press.
It will also engage those people that aren't going to stand on the corner but do want to get involved. Lots of people agree with the idea of what we're doing but this will get them involved during a long, cold winter. Once they've committed a dollar, getting them to step out with us on April 7th will be all the easier.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository estimates that there are 845,910 food insecure people in Cook Co. If we run a several month long campaign to match that $850,000 that's going to be spent to smear us, we can kill two birds with one stone: Negate the negative press while helping people in serious need. A fantastic win/win situation.
Yes, $850,000 is a lot of money to raise. We'll have to be very persistent, very focused, very public and reach out to the groups that have already tried to help us. But we can do it.
From Dec. 1st to Feb. 15th, we can motivate enough people to give a little because it helps a lot. From Feb. 15th we'll have six weeks to motivate people for an April 7th celebration.
