Magnificent Mile

Magnificent Mile

Postby DareWe » Tue Nov 15, 2011 7:25 pm

Black Friday I arrived ~9:30 and stayed till ~1:30. I estimate about 100 persons saw my two signs every light change at Chicago Ave/Michigan, perhaps 10,000 people during this time. I'd like direction on integrating "we're everywhere" actions, such as Magnificent Mile, with the OC Daily Schedule.

The next "occupy Mag Mile" presence will be Black Friday, Nov 25, 8AM - ??, initiating from Water Tower park, NW corner of Chicago and Michigan Ave (next to Chicago Ave stop on CTA Red Line). Weather 55F, partly cloudy. Most stores will open by 8, and I believe traffic will be substantial. I welcome fellow 99ers!

I propose being present, with posters, on Mag Mile and other major Chicago metro area shopping venues, throughout the run-up to holidays. I plan to walk, leaving from Water Tower (NW corner of Chicago and Michigan). beginning 1:30 PM Sunday (Partly sunny. Highs in the mid 40s). Energy Auditors Bd mtg prevents me walking Saturday. If someone walks Saturday I hope you will post your experience at this (Mag Mile) topic.
I say we turn constraints on meeting location and marches TO OUR ADVANTAGE. Don't want us at one spot, fine . . . we'll be EVERYWHERE.
Comments are invited!
(note, NOT leaving from Thompson Ctr as previously posted - most pedestrians are at heart of Mag Mile.)

Picture from Mag Mile 11-20-11 at ~4PM. Perhaps 10 to 20,000 people on sidewalks and criss-crossing corners were present during two hrs. We had 5 conversations, 10 requests for photos, and honking cars and buses. We also had friendly glances from CPD foot patrol. From this experience: views of the 99% can be extended by carrying clear LARGE signs in view of large numbers of pedestrians, such as at shopping venues. Corners seem to work best as people let their eyes visit signs while they wait. Sure, shoppers are in a hurry, but pedestrians are scanning their surroundings, eyeing the unusual, and will absorb y/our message.

Awesome. I'm planning a small subversive action on Sat, 11/19 with a couple of pals, to coincide with that evenings Disney hoo-hah parade of lights thingy... We'll let you know how it goes.

It's subtle, and sneaky. Gonna be fun. :)
