Hi Y'all,

I wanted to express a couple thoughts that were lingering in my mind since the recent emergency votes to kick people out of the movement. I think that the procedure that was followed really exacerbated the situation. The situation which started as a conflict between two individuals about property became a larger group conflict within Occupy Chicago as people lined up in front of the GA to voice their opinion for either side. I heard stories of trauma revisited because people weren't comfortable around someone with a history of violence, arguments about the different forms of violence and really there was no resolution, only turmoil. I think trauma needs to be revisited and people need to talk about forms of violence and privilege, but in a safe space!

I think one idea that was proposed recently was that if there is a conflict that whoever is mediating ask the individual involved who is supposedly the antagonist or all individuals if there's not a clear line to stop visiting Occupy Chicago for a week so that further conflict is avoided. Hopefully a week is enough time for the mediator/s to hear both sides and come to a resolution that is proposed by those harmed by the specific incidence and agreed to by all parties involved. I stress the importance of an effort to resolve each particular incidence both unique to those involved and as a larger pattern of behavior that is indicative of the imbalances of power in our culture.

I am not a professional mediator, but it's my belief that there's no need to blow the situation out of proportion. It doesn't help anybody because as one of CR's tenants expulsion from the group is a last resort and seemingly the first resort of the GA. I think that a step in better addressing future conflicts would be for OC to always show a presence of respect and mutual responsibility. I heard that people were forming a group to accept the role of mediator or 'peace keeper' when occupying. I think this is a key decision and I want to support mediators who also attend GA and represent the ideals of CR so that direct democracy doesn't become mob rule!

Sorry for the delayed response--just saw this. I'm fully in support of asking those who have committed aggressive or harmful behavior to refrain from participating for a week in OC activities, and definitely in support of not dragging things in front of the G.A., where so far they have only escalated. The problem in the past has been making folks feel that there is accountability through processes like mediation that would normally be confidential, at least until an agreement is reached. I hope that more regular circles/ mediations and broader participation in conflict resolution activities beyond the "official" committee would help with this.
