This weekend through Monday will more than likely lead to the largest presence we have seen.  In combination with the rallies on Saturday and Monday our voice has gotten louder.   It is also the weekend which will give many more people the opportunity to come see what the fuss is all about.

Right now we are in a state of flux and I find it to be essential that we begin to discuss how we are going to handle this upcoming growth.   Without a plan there is the potential for chaos to erupt.  It is the duty of everyone who has taken part thus far to reiterate our NON VIOLENT message to anyone who chooses to join us.  We also need to step it up and try to help keep some semblance of order(help keep people off the streets, keep paths clear, don't incite the police).

I think it is also extremely important that we begin to vote on any marches or actions that will take place in the name of Occupy Chicago.

Routes and times of marches (including routes to and from GA) should all be discussed, voted on and posted to the web before they occur.  This will help prevent us being slandered by the actions of a few people acting on their own.  As our numbers grow the potential for someone to do something we do not want, done in our name, grows.

There has been much talk of civil disobedience or showing up in symbolic places.  These actions should also be voted on and announced so that the public knows exactly what we as a group are endorsing.

Without steps like this in place we face the risk of a few bad apples or inexperienced people performing actions that give our entire movement a bad name.  This will ultimately loosing the trust of the public who seems to be growing in favor of the "occupy" movements.

Thoughts?

Swelling Numbers And Unwanted Actions

Swelling numbers are great.  We did have an unwanted action occur today, someone perpetrated an act of vandalism during a march.

The movement handled it well, and shamed the vandal out of our group. We are not about violence, that has no place in this movement.

m_x, I agree that we need to re-iterate that message of non-violence on a daily basis.

I don't think running to the police is necessarily the best way to handle that.

There is a man at GA who can't seem to control himself and constantly speaks out of turn.  Sometimes his statements our offensive, other times the entire group was applauding his ideas when he acted reasonably.  I watched an OC member try and bring the police over to restrain or detain the man.  I can't say I support those kinds of acts.

Yes I have seen the man, who is possibly schizophrenic, disrupt the GA meetings.  I don't think running to the police is a good idea either.  They are usually not that well trained or prepared to deal with the mentally ill. The mentally ill are often dumped off on them as a last resort, because no one else wants to deal with them.

Sadly, this man is a by-product of years of cutting social programs, he is most likely having difficulty getting access to psychiactric care.  He symbolizes one of the things we are protesting, the dissolution of the social safety net by the right, and complacency about it by the moderates and liberals.

I went and got the cops because I didnt know how this man would react.  I was protecting the protesters not trying to get the man in trouble. As time has gone on he has started to follow format a little better and all is well. He even has some pretty damn good things to say if you can get passed his "if women can have abortions then men shouldnt have to pay child support" type comments but he has been out there almost everyday and is in support of us ( tho misguided ). The police have backed off of us because we arent causing any trouble but they are nice to have around to protect us too.
