Better Days Ahead: A Cultural Tribute To the Memory of Troy Davis & Martina Correia
Friday 3/23, 8pm, $8 Entry CASH BAR
Wicker Park Arts Center (2215 W North Ave)
On Friday, March 23rd, the Occupy Chicago Rebel Arts Collective will host a cultural event remembering the life and struggles of Troy Davis and Martina Correia. Six months ago, the state of Georgia executed Davis for murder of a police officer--despite virtually no evidence and a worldwide campaign to save his life. Months later, his sister Martina Correia, a tireless fighter against racism and the death penalty, lost her battle with cancer. As though in concert, we needlessly lost these precious lives while a movement was born on Wall Street to fight these very kinds of oppression.
This event--featuring music, poetry, performance and art--will celebrate their lives, and the continuing struggle against the racist criminal injustice system. Though Troy and Martina are no longer with us, the culture of resistance they were a part of lives and thrives!
Featuring music from hip-hop powerhouse FM Supreme, BBU, slam poetry from local writer Rota, poet and poet Lara Yes Yes, a staged reading from the critically acclaimed play, The Exonerated; a breathtaking gallery of political art, a make-your-own-gear station, speakers from Amnesty International, Campaign to End the Death Penalty and Occupy 4 Prisoners; and many more acts to be announced.
Proceeds benefit Occupy Chicago and the Wicker Park Arts Center.
