G.A. Minutes Friday, 12/30/11
[sorry I forgot to send this out sooner!]
Minutes from G.A.
Date/Time: 12/30/11
Location: north of Congress, west of Michigan,
Attendance Count: 21
Moderator: Ryan M., Timekeeper : Kelly W., Stack: Brian, Note Taker: Justin B.
Andrew: Tech Committee If you aren’t aware of S.O.P.A.—you should be! Tech took an autonomous action yesterday. We took the website down for 24 hours as part of the blackout protesting S.O.P.A., and we are transferring the domain from Godaddy to registar.
Education Committee
On Jan 5th-8th the American Economic Association is having ASSA Meetings here in Chicago at the Hyatt. They will be praising the faulty economic theory that got into this mess in the first place. Who wants to crash a party?
Keith: Transportation Committee. We’re still looking to get a bus for Occupy Chicago. We had one in mind, but it has already been sold. We’re still looking!
Moderator: Oh, and from what I hear about housing we should be moving into our new home the first week of January.
Now it’s time for calls for assistance!
Jenny: We’re starting up a math and science club @ the Hacker space, (pumping station #1) 3354 N. Elston. Come join us Jan 15th if you’re into math and science and stuff.
Also, in late April, after tax day, a national G.A. is being put together in D.C. to overturn citizens united. We’re trying to put together a group to go.
Andrew: Awesome Jim, who helped us a lot early on in the occupation with signs and coffee and food and stuff is very ill, and in the hospital. Many of you know him, he owns his own business. Anyway, his sickness is very serious and we started a wepay account on his behalf.
Also, for those who don’t know last night the Occupy Honolulu camp was cleared out and we should hold an event to show solidarity with them.
Ryan: Hi, I’m interested in starting up a poetry committee so if you’re interested contact mpg0071793@aol.com
Moderator: We’ve now got an emergency proposal
EMERGENCY PROPOSAL
Bassicly, on the 27th Robert a.k.a. Durag, in his frustration took it upon himself to kick a window at Grace Place. If you aren’t aware Grace Place does a lot for us including allowing a lot of occupiers to stay overnight and for us to store most of our supplies there. Grace place has requested we pay for the broken window, which is $600.
Call for a vote:
In favor of paying for the window 18
Opposed 0
Abstained 1
Moderator: And the proposal passes!
Moderator: There is no general assembly tomorrow for NewYears Eve.
Also, you should attend the Rally against police brutality on NewYears day at 2pm at the 95th redline train terminal.
Soapbox:
Jenny: People really need to spend more time at H.Q.
Andrew: Again, I want to talk about S.O.P.A., If you don’t know about it, educate yourself.
Keith read Kelly Watson’s email that was forwarded to all committees. A proposal is being drafted to help her family occupy a foreclosed home.
Sam: Hi, I’m a traveler between occupations and I’ve been here in Chicago for the holidays. I just want to tell you all that all the occupations are struggling right now with the same problems this one is, but no occupation is dead. I encourage you to talk to people, find a committee that interests you, find out where and how you can make a difference. Someone said recently that the people who are going to make the biggest difference in the occupy movement haven’t even joined it yet.
Brian: We need to step up security and discourage people who are just with the movement for the sustenance it provides. We cant have people taking advantage of us and also making a bad name for us when they act on their own, claiming Occupy Chicago, like Robert did.
Thomas: Yesterday there was an incident at H.Q. We had different occupiers around. This guy came with a bat and began making threats. Although he was arrested, and no one was hurt, this man is a prime example why we all must act as security when down at H.Q. This is a non-violent movement, so we can not react to people like that physically but when we see incidents like that there is nothing wrong with calling 911 and getting someone aggressive like him moved along on outta there.
Moderator: Motion to adjourn?
Crowd: “2nded!”
