Bank transfer day and credit unions

Postby Brooklyn » Mon Oct 31, 2011 4:34 pm

I think there is a need for more education about alternative banking options (credit unions, etc.). Bank transfer day is coming up in just a few days. (Nov. 5th) I would love to take part in it but I don't know much about credit unions, much less how to find or pick one. We should be promoting this more.

The National Credit Union Administration (www.ncua.gov/) as well as
www.creditunion.coop/ actually provide searchable databases where one can enter one's zip code or city and the page provides all the credit unions in the vecinity.

Direct action committee is organizing an event for Saturday midday. Please join us thursday after 7PM GA if you are interested in direct group action.

In the meantime, here are some resources about finding a credit union:

A very convenient community bank is Urban Partnership Bank Headquartered at 7054 S. Jeffery Blvd. Chicago, with a branch at 55E Jackson downtown Chicago. I propose we open as many accounts as possible over the next two weeks and then do the following direct action based on this: http://www.alternet.org/economy/152930/ ... age_crisis

Mortgage fix we need to organize around and get Urban Partnership Bank which
bought out South Shore bank to implement because of this. They are "holding 600 foreclosed homes of residents evicted on Chicago's South side." Taken from their press release: https://www.upbnk.com/about-us/news/in- ... leaseid37/

I propose an action date of third Monday in November at their HQ office at 7054 S. Jeffery Blvd. on the South Side of Chicago. #OccopyChicago makes a statement on Fed, foreclosure, jobs, homeless, and banks all with one unified action. not forgetting to demand that they take corporate money out of politics.

All the publicity over Bank Transfer Day is so fantastic. A lot of interest has been paid to “Bank Transfer Day” on November 5, the online grassroots campaign to get individuals to change from retail banking to a credit union or neighborhood bank. Thousands of individuals changed. Early Bank Transfer Day numbers show success. As I can remember, the campaign, started at the end of September, urged anyone and everyone to switch to a credit union or community bank on Nov. 5. Credit unions all across the nation were reporting huge increases in membership. With the campaigns, no wonder it was successful.
