National Student Union
National Student Union
I am starting to organize a National student union. With this union we will strike against the rising tuition costs for students and the outrageous setup of our government loans. The student body is one of the largest untapped resources for protest. It is time that the educated coalesce and become one. The average debt for a college graduate is growing and we are becoming increasingly slaves as we work to pay off our loans for an education that is constitutionally our right, based on "merit" at the least. I am working on creating a website, fliers, speeches, public protests, and organizing teams to do this in schools across the nation. My idea is to have current students not register for following terms until prices are dropped. If we have a large enough group this will crash the system.
Secondly, the education system needs to be overhauled. Why is it that Sweden has free education through professional school? Because they care about their citizens and their country. It is time that we who are oppressed rise up and take action, enough is enough. Anyone who is willing to help please feel free to email me: hereandnowiamu@gmail.com

Re: National Student Union
This country has a long history of attempts to form student organizations--most of them don't end well. I think that the problem is that, in the US, everything gets turned into a lobby; only economic power can translate as political power. It's a crappy, brutal reality that you'll have to work around. However, there are a few organizations which come close to what you want to do.
Here's some examples of failed and successful attempts: The National Student Federation of America, founded in 1925, was the first national student government association (Edward R. Murrow was a president). Their international focus, and interest in civil rights/student issues was right-on, but they didn't really organize much, and disbanded in during WWII. They were followed by the National Student Association (NSA, founded 1947 in Madison, WI). They're known mostly for their civil rights activism (Tom Hayden was a staff member, and later formed the Students for a Democratic Society, which has an active 2006 incarnation and is the closest thing to what you want to do, and are really pushing for student NATO protests in May. website: http://www.newsds.org/). But the NSA, too, fell apart after a scandal which revealed that the organization was partly underwritten by the CIA (the funding they lost after the CIA left dismantled them). Remaining staff became an active part of the anti-war Vietnam Mobilization Committee, and did all their printing. The fragmented NSA organization itself merged with the National Student Lobby (1978) and later with the National Student Education Fund, to form the United States Student Association (USSA); they're going to have a new website soon--and did a lot to facilitate student protests during Occupy Education's March 1 day of action.
What crap that a real National Student Union doesn't exist. Anything with a hint of collectivity gets struck down in this country, and it's only getting worse. We need this now, especially after seeing all the good CONFECH (Confederation of Chilean Students) did in the Chilean Winter protests. I want to help--I'm in high school, which, while different from higher education in scores of ways, still suffers under the same corporatizing burdens as public education everywhere--except even more voicelessly. Again with the Chile model: While no national high school student organizations exist in Chile, different cities have Federations akin to CONFECH and which played a major role in mobilizing high school students, and which had their demands incorporated into the list of those for University students. (Not to mention Cones, the Coordinadora Nacional de Estudiantes de Secundarios (National Coordinator of High School Students), was created from the protests).
I've started a website, Occupy High School.org (link: http://occupyhighschool.org/), which is still pretty new. Another student who is part of OccupyChicago, Alex Forgue, is also part of the site and has done a lot on it. I'll send you an email and see what I can do.
