Documentation

Postby Nikki Jacobs » Sun Oct 30, 2011 3:03 pm

Hello-
I am part of a new grassroots organization - Terra Firma Productions. Our mission is to provide accurate coverage and produce independent content on material and topics the mainstream media would otherwise distort or ignore. Which brings us here. We would like to make a proposal to document the Occupy Wall Street movement here in Chicago. We were told to bring this proposal up in the forum to be discussed at the following day's GA. I would also like to bring up at this time that we have missed a good portion of what has happened so far. With that in mind-if our proposal is approved we would like to collaborate with anyone you know of who has any unbiased documentation of the movement so far(basically to fill in the blanks for what we have missed). At least 2 of us will be attending tomorrow's GA(Monday October 31st) at 7 p.m.
Thank you,
Nikki Jacobs

No one has the authority to tell you not to cover what we're doing. Individuals can choose not to talk to you, but hey, if your mission is to intelligently cover what's going on, go for it. I'm sure that as the movement grows, we will be smeared, so it would be helpful to have some good documentation to provide people.

You can see a brief snippet of coverage that we provided the weekend of the 22nd/23rd here. Ours is the elevated-position shot on the left and some commentary starts around 1:30. We also spent the day taking documentary footage, but editing has been slow because our videographer's husband had his hours cut at his job and now she is looking for work herself on top of full-time school course-load.

I've tried turning my attention towards a national-level media group in the meantime (no offense, but without direct actions and other content, there's little in Chicago to cover). That hasn't produced much fruit, sadly, but there are a few interested persons scattered about.

You don't need a proposal to make a documentary.

In my opinion, it makes more sense to make a proposal if you want Occupy Chicago to support your work, as a body. Making that proposal would require you to first create said documentary. I say go for it!
