Hello! I would like to propose a family day at the movement. I am sure families are welcome, but feel a day organized soley to encourage families could have a positive impact on the movement. I was an active protester in my youth and understand the importance of reaching out to all the demographic groups. I feel the "law enforcement community" would feel more pressure to behave with this demographic present as well. I posted in another thread as well. Looking forward to any feedback. I am proud of each and every one of you!! I feel hope for my country for the first time in a LONG time! Keep it up!!!! (((((HUGS))))) to all of you!17

Family Day

Postby marymcmahon@clear.net » Thu Oct 20, 2011 8:02 am

I like this idea. Some kids were brought to the Oct 15th party which ended up being a pretty scary experience for them, especially those who expected a "party".

Many school children were there on the 8th with the unions.

I am sure there are teachers who would like to use this as a civics lesson.

I saw an organized protest march through Roscoe Village by grade schoolers against bullying.

Maybe the University of Chicago Lab School could help? The principles of the movement fits their philosophy... and educates politicians children. That's a way to bring it home!

Family Day

Mary, I like the idea of involving the University. I will contact them this week. The day of the 15th, I almost brought my children. I went to the FB page, and realized this day was going to have a larger than usual attendance. ( A good thing! ) I hesitated to have them there during large scale arrests. My previous experience protesting taught me that our largest rallies had the highest arrest rates.

I believe the children will learn a great deal about democracy ( What we have left of it) by participating. I strongly feel that having them there would change the perception of the group on a larger scale. This group needs to have the public image of employed, responsible people to get the people we are trying to reach to pay attention. It is harder to disregard that demographic.

I really want to know who is in charge of logisitics for Occupy Chicago. I will keep at it. Thanks for the reply Mary!
