People’s Summit Donation

On behalf of the Education Committee, this proposal asks that Occupy Chicago allocate $700 to help pay for the space needed to host the People’s Summit, convening May 12-13 at 500 W Cermak. This two-day event is designed to launch our NATO week of actions; confirmed speakers include Jesse Jackson, Sr., Mumia Abu Jamal, and anti-NATO activist Malalai Joya.

We’re expecting close to 1000 attendees for 4 plenary sessions and concurrent interactive workshops, as well as a live entertainment segment for that Saturday night. Because of this, CANG8 and the Education Committee secured an agreement with Cermak’s building manager to pay a flat rate of $5000 to use as many rooms as needed for that weekend. There’s also a $1000 security deposit.

Since there’s no admissions fee, these costs will be covered by donations from individuals, unions, churches, and other institutions. CAN8 has already agreed to allocate funds for the People’s Summit, and we’re asking the General Assembly to approve the sum of $700 as Occupy Chicago’s contribution.
