Re: Tech com funding proposal
Do we go with just 2 large speakers, or many smaller speakers ? This is somewhat solved via the requested FM transmitter, which would allow us to simply have a ton of radios, this is better because then you don't have people in front being deafened while people in back cannot hear. But I see that as more for outdoor GAs and events.

Re: Tech com funding proposal
Tech committee is requesting funds for unanticipated but required items. All items, needed for site hosting, extra software licensing for live streaming, printers and their supplies for making much needed fliers and posters, and internet related hardware such as routers. Many of these items need to be purchased for the indoor location so it can be a fully functional base for use by occupy or any of the local occupations. The printer and its supplies on its own will run $1600, so you can see the need for these funds. The webserver, application proxy, mail server and backup server are all hosted at 4 separate servers. In addition to being hosted at separate companies, the liscenscing are also from different companies. For the occupy movement to thrive we need to maintain these vital services for communication and updates. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to maintain working, functional communications so proposals may be met, ideas can be exchanged, and the occupy movement has purpose and direction.
Server costs shall be listed, but first a word on the hardware. One of the biggest issues facing tech is the issue of shopping around for hardware as well as the servers, much of it is done offshore, specifically for security reasons. This prohibits the amount of shopping around that can be done, as we often must use the same vendors for very specific or difficult to find items vital to operation. It must also be said that the hardware we receive, whether stored in our indoor location or, failing that a new location, would be relocated to wherever our current base of operations is. No matter where we are located, we still need things vital to us. For any movement to survive it is vital to be able to spread our message effectively, as well as easily and with good cost. Outsourcing printing is not as feasible as I would like since it is typically only cost effective when it is done in large quantities, Some people have offered to approach print houses directly during the last time this request was made, no one had followed up. Having a printer where anyone could quickly and easily be able to print out the newest fliers would be of monumental importance as we can always use more members and support, and we can only raise this with effective paper coverage.
It should be realized that for us to continue we absolutely must maintain communication and continually expand our message. Without influx of members, the movement will lose all its power. After all, it is the constant influx of fresh members that carries forward our momentum to reach our goals. The build out, for instance, aids many of our most driven members who do not have printers or internet to aid them in spreading our message. This is a peaceful movement, but without technology it will be hard if not impossible to continue. This movement has taken a lot of my time, and I passionately want it to grow and spread, but without the funds it cannot spread further, its message cannot be seen on street corners and online. When going through this list of much needed items, remember that the peaceful revolution cannot occur without technology in this day and age, or the expenses that come with that crucial technology.
The first item is the Designjet 130R 24" 2400x1200 dpi 245.3 sq.ft/hr 6 Color Floor Standing Large Format Printer. Cost: $1323.50 (this does not include shipping or tax)

The inks are optional. Select the inks you wish to use. People were kindly asking for information via the forums about comparisons and thus here is a comparison for different inks.
Dye Based Inks
Dyes are water soluble (dissolves in water) and are known for easily obtaining saturated, brilliant colors due to its small molecule size, 1.5-4 nanometers (1 nanometer=1/1000 of a micrometer, 1 micrometer=1/1000 of a millimeter). This small particle size refracts or scatters very little light providing a large color gamut as well as allowing the dye to "seep" into most media. This "seeping" enables dye based inks to be used on media without the inkjet receptor top coat (a coating applied to media by the manufacturer before reaching the customer) necessary for pigmented ink adhesion.
Unfortunately, the same characteristic that provides for these advantages is also the source of its poor lightfastness and instability in many gas enviornments. A ph neutral media is recommended for use with dye based inks because of their tendency to oxidize in an unbalance ph environment, directly affecting dye giclee ink's longevity. Dyes also have poor water and humidity fastness due to their water soluble nature. When printing on canvas with dye inks use of a top coat, like Bulldog Ultra, is recommended for water proofing.
Pigment Based Inks
The defining characteristic that differentiates dye and pigment based giclee inks is the complexity and size of their ink particles. The dye "particle" is made up of one molecule while the pigment particle is made up of numerous molecules bonded together by extremely stable chemical bonds, creating a significantly larger particle measured to be .05-.20 micrometers. When comparing surface area and volume of a partice, the pigment's relatively small surface accounts for its resistance to photofading agents and chemical attack. Translated into english this means pigment inks have a better lightfastness and are less sensitive to humidity and environmental gases. Because pigments are water insoluble they are carefully displaced throughout the carrier most commonly by micro encapsulation, which encases each particle in resin. Dye based inks are water soluble and can become mobile in a high humidity environment, while pigment inks are water insoluble and immune to the adverse effects humidity can cause to dye based prints.
Again the same attribute that makes pigmented inks so stable is also the characteristic that inhibits it in certain areas. Its larger particle size causes more light to be scattered resulting in a smaller gamut making some colors look muted or dull. This is most noticeable when trying to achieve rich reds. However this can be overcome with careful output, media and profile combinations. Pigment inks are also more susceptible to metamerism, which means the shifting of color under different lighting. As pigments inks continue to evolve this issue is becoming less and less noticeable. Due to the large particle size of pigmented inks they cannot simply "seep" into medias and require something to "attach" to, a inkjet receptor top coat, which, to the end user translates to higher media cost. When printing on canvas with pigment inks, use of a top coat, like Bulldog Ultra, is recommended for water proofing.
Sublimation ink
Sublimation ink is often used for cups,T-shirts
Textile Application
Designed for printing onto polyester substrates, these versatile inks will sublime onto polyester rich apparel fabrics, for example sports wear; carpet fabrics; sails and flagging material. Fabrics retain their natural handle making this process ideal for garment sampling and also promotional banners. These printed fabrics are hardwearing and washable. Further information on Textile Ink products is available.
Hardware Application
Subliming Ink is a perfect solution for heat transferring images onto pre-coated ceramics, metals and plastic. The list of applications is endless: mugs, decorative tiles, fridge magnets, mouse mats, trophies and even surf boards!!! Due to the wide variety of substrates available, working with these inks opens the door to short or long run, quick response promotional gifts and product sampling. The process of transferring the image is quick and clean with excellent transfer from paper to the substrate.
subliming inks produce brilliant colour and good light fastness when applied to polyester and polyester coated substrates. Applying heat to the printed image with a press, whether through transfer paper or directly, fixes these vivid inks into the polyester substrate allowing the item to be washed time and time again.
There are a multitude of inks required for this system and as such shall be listed in detail.
HP DYE INK BLACK 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)
Quantity:20
Contrary to popular belief, black is not a true color in the way the primary and secondary colors are, however sometimes black is required in order to contrast brighter colors. For what value is life without the contrasts of light and dark? Many renaissance artists disagreed with the use of black and prefer brighter, more pastel colors born of the secondary colors. While darker colors do exist in these revered paintings from the golden age of man, they were mostly used in order to showcase beauty in the natural world and are thus typically earthen colors utilising reds and browns.
HP DYE INK CYAN 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)

Cyan, a fusion of blues and greens. Due to its combination of colors that make it what it is, it is more able to work other colors mixing and fermenting into a glorious shade encompassing almost all shades of blue and green separately, or any mixture in between.
HP DYE INK Magenta 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)
Quantity:10
More of a dark red then anything, this color may be most familiar to you as it is very similar to the dark red-brown colors of most bricks. Red is a powerful color capable of making a statement about humanity and its strengths. Red is also the color of our blood vessels, and if this color is seen on your skin, check to see if you have a cut and if so sterilize it immediately. Bleach is typically and popularly a powerful disinfectant
HP DYE INK YELLOW 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)
Quantity:10
Yellow doesn't get that much love. Not even a mixture form of yellow here, perhaps it is because of the very light color nature of yellow. In it's natural stage pure yellow is very easy to turn into a dark brown mess, it cannot take much mixing of color to very fundamentally alter its color composition. This color is best known for being in sunflowers, bananas, taxis, and that thing they put on your car that make it not drive too good.
HP DYE INK LIGHT CYAN 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)
Quantity:10
Quite similar to cyan, it is merely lighter in color. This is because there is no white ink cartridge, which makes mixing colors to a lighter tone than naturally somewhat more difficult. Where as lighter colors like yellow can sometimes work to make the base into something brighter, it is not always a successful mix. When mixing colors typically they grow darker, as well as shifting in the color spectrum. While white also makes this effect, they don't make white ink so deal with it.
HP DYE INK LIGHT MAGENTA 100ml/bottle(40 oz.)
cost: $8.99 (does not include shipping/taxes)
Quantity:10
Similar comment for this as for light cyan. Magenta is a very powerful color, but how to get pink with a dark red? While magenta and yellow can work together in order to accomplish your femme fatale poster you will show you friends at next gencon, sometimes you require a lighter pink. An easter bunny rabbit, for example, is typically depicted in a lighter, more vibrant pink and with a red from the darker end of the spectrum your bunny rabbit will look less like a cuddly friend and more like a vicious predator hunting and stalking you through the woods while you scroll helplessly through your iphone trying to find the contact who you can call that will help you.
Who can truly put a price on the beauty and magnificence of colors?

Re: Tech com funding proposal
As to the thought about the PA system, I'm personally in favor of a portable one but don't think it matters a whole lot either way. Tech could probably turn a permanent one into a portable one if necessary.

Re: Tech com funding proposal
1. Comcast Business internet
The plan from them that would fit our needs the best without being overkill is
$99.95mo + $80 install
That comes with 22Mbps down/5Mbps up
Streaming HD often takes 5Mbps up on its own, the up is the issue here as most of what we will be doing is uploading things like videos to the internet.
2. Chicago WiFi Project
This is a project that is underway, being headed by members of tech as well as outside organizations, to bring a wifi mesh network to cover chicago.
You can see the current details of the project here:
http://wiki.oatt.net/index.php?title=Ci ... or_chicago
This will likely cost close to $2k to setup, but aside from the fact it would give us a
100Mbps down / 100Mbps up
connection, which is MUCH MUCH faster than comcast, it will also provide large swaths of chicago with wifi, including the street at lasalle and jackson. And more importantly, would be easy to shoot wifi over the area where G8 will be held, allowing HD streaming easily from the street even in the event that there are issues with 3g/4g.
And lets not forget, its wifi covering chicago, that isn't supporting companies who support SOPA and there is no monthly fee, and even when we leave cermack, the wifi mesh will remain.

Re: Tech com funding proposal
Via the chicago wifi project, it would take 7 minutes.
Keep in mind that is for a single person uploading a single DVD, we will likely have multiple people uploading videos at the same time.
Also someone just mentioned this to me, Comcast does not guarantee those speeds, those are the max speed you can get in optimal conditions, so in all likelihood you will not actually get 5mbit up for a single user.
Also to note, we could do both, get comcast for 1mo while the wifi project is solidified, then switch over.

I would love to know more about this. Where would we be able to install the hardware permanently? And how do we get coverage outside of the building itself? Is there anything in the original budget that could be trimmed that would help cover the $2K? I look at the expensive printer stuff and think maybe that could be cut since there are printers we can use (albeit at an inconvenience).
I need to know more. This is fascinating stuff.

Re: Tech com funding proposal
The chicago wifi project is relying primarily on donors to donate roof space, so the various relays will be more or less permanent. Why would anyone donate roof space ? free internet. Also, its roof space, are people really going up there that often ?
For some, who live in high rises, it would be donating window space and just having an eyesore in 1 window, IF they chose to be a relay, if its just a node then the antennas are small.
The coverage actually starts outside the space, at the datacenter that has donated the bandwith, they are also donating roof space for the origination of the signal, cermak would be receiving it and then relaying. cermack would also not be the first hop, which is why I said even if we left cermack, the wifi would still be around, just the cermack relay would be down, other relays would continue to operate. Multikulti (on the north side) is planning to be another relay as well.
But if this must be had at expense of the other items on the list, I would say no.
The other items are far more useful for us immidiatly then wifi covering chicago would be.
A note about the printer and printing in general. Several people have mentioned they can get local printers to carry some of the burden or sell to us "at cost".
1. Figuring out "at cost" for something that depends on many variables, like the combination of colors used to produce another color, is a pain in the ass. Noone wants to do this. and I think people are underestimating howmuch we will print once we have that as an actual option, No offense to anyone but there is a large difference between "someone said they can help with this" and someone actually helping with "this" ("this" being anything)
2. And this is a bigger issue that no one has mentioned at all, 2 days after we moved in, someone accidentally, screwed up the signs of one of our neighbors, incidentally, a printer. It was smoothed over but the fact remains, its pretty easy to piss people off, what happens when they get sick of printing out 500 flyers at a time and we are suddenly without the ability to print fairly cheaply ? Everything just stops. Everyone gets pissed. There is no reason to wear out our welcome with our allies by being constant beggars, we need allies MUCH more then we need to save money on printing. And more to the point, there will still be tons of non-large format printing to do, notice there ISN'T a laser printer in this proposal, so people can feel free to run the gamut on asking for standard flyers to be printed from our allies to test the waters of what I said.
