Food for Thought: Reducing Committees

Postby ciwp » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:59 am

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PROPOSAL. It is just a discussion of the subject.

Occupy Chicago currently has 21 separate committees. Many of them obviously are redundant and should be either consolidated or eliminated. I think most can be saved, and quite a few turned into subcommittees under a larger umbrella committee. There are also a few obvious flaws in our committees - we don't have a Women's Rights or a Health Care committee, even though these are enormously important subjects. So I added a few new committees and subcommittees to this list as well. It reduces the total number of committees from 21 to 11, with a number of subcommittees.

I repeat: this is NOT A PROPOSAL - just a basis upon which we can start discussing this subject.

1) Human Rights (NEW)
Subcommittees:
Women's Rights
LGBT Rights
Civil Rights
Immigrant Rights

2) Health Care (NEW)

3) Education

4) Housing

5) Labor
Subcommittees:
Trade Union Outreach
Jobs/Employment (helps find jobs for occupiers as well as finding qualified people to handle work we need to get done internally/externally)

6) Legal
Subcommittees:
Civil Liberties Defense

7) Secretariat
Subcommittees:
Political Committee (makes sure that every action carried out by Occupy Chicago's committees is in concert with our political program, such as it is, so our organization 'speaks with one united voice')
Organization/Internal Coordination/Coordination (consolidate?)
Conflict Resolution
Welcoming/Outreach (consolidate?)
Research (?)
Press
Direct Action
Donations
Security (abolished?)

8) Arts & Recreation

9) Spiritual Affairs

10) Tech
Subcommittees:
Social Media

Mark, you clearly understand that this is not the appropriate forum for this. It should either be in a General forum or the perhaps the Internal Coordination Committee forum.

Occupy Chicago currently has 21 separate committees. Many of them obviously are redundant and should be either consolidated or eliminated.

Mark, this topic has already been brought up in the General Assembly. It is not of immediate concern. I believe the General Assembly should return its focus to our mission of political activism and refuse to devoted its critical time to your repeated attempts to distract the Occupy Chicago movement.

This forum is listed under the category "General - Potential Proposals". If the folks maintaining this forum think it should be moved to another section of the forum, that's fine with me.

Mark, you assaulted Brian for telling you that you can't stay at Grace place, in accordance with long-established rules. You then threw hot, scalding water onto people, and attempted to assault multiple individuals. You then threw brake fluid on people and said you were going to set them on fire. You're a dangerous, mentally unstable individual and for the safety of our members you will be arrested if you show up again. Honestly, I hope you get taken by the authorities into custody for a long time, that's what you need.
