Occupy Chicago: Die-In Commemorates Two Month Anniversary of Occupy Movement
CHICAGO 11/17/11 5:45pm – Thousands have gathered at Jackson & LaSalle to participate in Occupy Chicago’s N17 mass action, as we commemorate the two-month anniversary of the Occupy movement, and stand in solidarity with all of the Occupations around the country facing evictions, repression, and police violence.
All of Occupy Chicago’s N17 actions are non-violent. As always, we will employ peaceful methods of speaking truth to power.
Jackson and LaSalle is Occupied. Occupiers just held a ‘die-in’ in front of the Federal Reserve, falling to the ground and refusing to move. The human mic was used by the Occupy Chicago Direct Action Committee to deliver a eulogy, which says:
“We gather here today to mourn the death of poor and working people, of the middle class, of the 99%. Everyday people cut from their services, denied their power, subdued from their democracy. The powers called for austerity measures, telling us to tighten our belts while they fastened them around our necks. The wealthiest among us walk free, without charge for their crimes, without responsibility. They foreclose our homes, deny us employment, segregate our neighborhoods, saddle us with debt. They deny our children good schooling, and argue that none of us have responsibility to our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters. And what is more we have all remained silent, allowing them to do this. We have remained silent and let them condemn and execute the poor, the working, and the middle class, the 99%. This is the fate of everyday people. Let them rest, while the 1% destroy peace. These people are US. ALL OF US. Their death is OUR death, their pain is our pain. Their STRUGGLE is OUR STRUGGLE. We can no longer be bystanders. It's time we raise our voices in testimony against the criminals that condemn them! We MUST resist austerity, rebuild the economy, and RECLAIM OUR DEMOCRACY.It's time we stand with these deceased, with EACH OTHER, TOGETHER.”
After the die in, Occupiers completely encircled the Board of Trade, and are continuing to rally.
“We stand in complete solidarity with Occupy Wall Street,” said Megan Groves, an Occupy Chicago committee volunteer. “We are going to tell the world that you can raid a camp, but you can’t destroy a movement. We aren’t going anywhere, we’re going everywhere!”
