Our PROPOSED Demands

Tags:

These are the list of proposed demands. They will be up for vote tonight at 7pm @ 500 S Michigan Ave in front of the horse.

1.PASS HR 1489 REINSTATING GLASS-STEAGALL. – A depression era safeguard that separated the commercial lending and investment banking portions of banks. Its repeal in 1999 is considered the major cause of the global financial meltdown of 2008-2009.

2. REPEAL BUSH TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY

3. FULLY INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE THE WALL STREET CRIMINALS who clearly broke the law and helped cause the 2008 financial crisis.

4.OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED v. US. – A 2010 Supreme Court Decision which ruled that money is speech. Corporations, as legal persons, are now allowed to contribute unlimited amounts of money to campaigns in the exercise of free “speech.”

5. PASS THE BUFFET RULE ON FAIR TAXATION, CLOSE CORPORATE TAX LOOPHOLES, PROHIBIT HIDING FUNDS OFFSHORE.

6. GIVE THE SEC STRICTER REGULATORY POWER, STRENGTHEN THE CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU, AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE FOR OWNERS OF FORECLOSED MORTGAGES WHO WERE VICTIMS OF PREDATORY LENDING.

7.TAKE STEPS TO LIMIT THE INFLUENCE OF LOBBYISTS AND ELIMINATE THE PRACTICE OF LOBBYISTS WRITING LEGISLATION.

8. ELIMINATE RIGHT OF FORMER GOVERNMENT REGULATORS TO WORK FOR CORPORATIONS OR INDUSTRIES THEY ONCE REGULATED.

9. ELIMINATE CORPORATE PERSONHOOD.

10. INSIST THE FEC STAND UP FOR THE PUBLIC INTEREST IN REGULATING PRIVATE USE OF PUBLIC AIRWAVES to help ensure that political candidates ARE GIVEN EQUAL TIME for free at reasonable intervals during campaign season.

11. REFORM CAMPAIGN FINANCE WITH THE PASSAGE OF THE FAIR ELECTIONS NOW ACT (S.750, H.R. 1404).

12. FORGIVE STUDENT DEBT – The same institutions that gave almost $2T in bailouts and then extended $16T of loans at little to no interest for banks can surely afford to forgive the $946B of student debt currently held. Not only does this favor the 99% over the 1%, it has the practical effect of more citizens spending money on actual goods, not paying down interest.

More fundamental change needed

These proposed grievances are great. However, I think we should push the debate much further. Let us not compromise with our opponents in the 1% in our heads and offer the solutions we think we will arrive at from that compromise. Let us instead put forward the actual uncompromising agenda we support and expand the bounds of the public debate. Let us demand a Path to Prosperity for US All (p2p4USA).

P2p4USA includes a plan to repay all personal debt and all privately held federal debt to put us all on a more prosperous path for the future. In addition, p2P4USA brings democracy to our corporate workplaces and to the stewardship of our natural resources so that plutocrats and other oligarchs no longer reign over the 99% in those areas.

Self-Understanding

When the protesters are ready to move from ineffective acts of symbolism to purposeful deeds of substance they will be ready to become students of wisdom and a teacher will appear.  Any change that does not invlove a change in human nature is no change at all.  Just a re-arrangement of the toy blocks.

Do not be a social reformer.  Become an agent for individual inner change.  Social reform has no value.  The great Truths do not take hold of the masses.  They prefer their illusions about life and happiness.   Social reformers know this.  They never seek justice for their followers, only the power of injustice for themselves.  Think of all the times that humans have placed their faith in smooth-talking egoists only to be betrayed and disappointed by a new cabal of meglomaniacs.  In America this is a four year cycle of voter self-slapping ignorance.  It is a social lie that the majority of people are right.  Only an awakened human being is right, and he is one in a million.

Only a conscious human being who knows the true meaning of happiness and understands the correct purpose for money has the ability to lead others out of the jungle of despair in which he once found himself trapped and lost.  So, I commend you for not wanting to put anyone on the pedestal of leadership because, if he lacks a principled ideology, he will surely be corrupted and a pawn of the forces which you now denounce.  I support your movement because your concerns are healthy and necessary to the true interests of all people and are therefore legitimate and non-negotiable.  If you need help structuring a coherent philosophy and a unifying set of principles I humbly offer my services.

Additional Demand

These demands are great, but I would like to suggest another: Reform our electoral system to one that gives third parties a fighting chance.

Simple modifications like Instant-Runoff-Voting make it much easier for third party candidates because people can vote for them without risking tossing the election to the other party. Proportional representation (for legislative bodies) would also help third parties. But our current electoral system often gives is a choice we're not happy with. We need to re-engineer our electoral system to give us better choices. (Look up Instant Runoff Voting on Wikipedia for more info.)
